The Forever Home Garage
One of our specialties at TriBuilt is working with clients to design and build their FOREVER HOME. We typically find ourselves discussing how to create a luxury kitchen with practical elements or a master suite that is both spa-like and accessible. The room that often gets the least attention in the design process is the garage. Here are the top 3 things to think through when designing your forever home garage:
1. A Larger Garage
In most states the minimum 2 car garage is 20’ x 20’. This is perfect for the home that has no need for garage storage and have 2 regular-sized cars that don’t require any special accessibility. However, a forever home should meet the needs of all generations and provide optimal accessibility. So we suggest a two car garage to be at least 25’ x 25’. This leaves room for your vehicle to have a 5 foot wheelchair ramp and plenty of room for storage and easy navigation.
2. Pet Doors
If you plan to have indoor / outdoor pets, a pet door is essential. We have found one of the best ways to do this is to think through placement during the design process. A few things to consider are:
Will your pet door need to lead to a fenced in area?
What size door does your pet require?
Do you want to install a door that keeps “visitors” out (new doors can work with electric collars that unlock them)?
3. Power Up
During the building process you will want to consider what will be going in the your garage and where. Here are a few important questions to ask yourself:
What major household appliances will your garage need to power (2nd refrigerator, freezer, television, water softener or water heater)?
Will you have a workbench with outlets for power tools?
Do you have any need for a 30 amp outlet inside the garage?
