The 3 Kitchen Activity Zones

November 20, 2017

Knowing the 3 zones of activity drastically impacts your new kitchen design

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Therefore, it deserves special attention during the design process.  Poorly organized spaces often turn into daily frustrations, leaving the heart of the home as a place of tension.

Houzz, in its article "Stash It All: Know the 3 Zones of Kitchen Storage" by Steven Randel, identifies the 3 zones as; the refrigerator center, the sink center, and the range center.

Zone 1 -The Refrigerator Center

The focus of this zone is in the receiving of new product and the start of meal preparation. For optimal use of space, we suggest zone 1 has the following items located within arm's length:

  • An appliance garage

  • A large work space / countertop

  • Cooking utensils

  • Dry staple goods

  • Pantry

  • Cookbooks

Zone 2 -The Sink Center

The Range Center is where cooking and food preparation takes place. There are typically two configurations, a range or a cooktop with wall ovens. We encourage our clients to place these items near the dining room. Anything needed to cook should be set in this zone:

  • Dishwasher

  • Drinkware

  • Flatware

  • Plates and bowls

  • Knives and cutting boards

  • Dish towels

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Trash and recycling

Zone 3 -The Range Center

The Range Center is where cooking and food preparation takes place. There are typically two configurations, a range or a cooktop with wall ovens. We encourage our clients to place these items near the dining room. Anything needed to cook should be set in this zone:

  • Countertop

  • Pot Holders

  • Pots and pans

  • Bakeware

  • Serving platters

  • Spices

  • Cooking oils

  • Cooking Utensils
